Chef Fernandez, a native of NYC, was born in Harlem and discovered his natural culinary talent while enrolled at Long Island City High School in Queens, New York. It was a culinary course that first enlightened Fernandez to his inherent culinary intuitions and, at the young age of 15, set him on the path to pursuing a career as a professional chef.
Shortly after graduating, Chef Fernandez was selected for a prestigious apprenticeship working under Michelin-star Chef Georges Masraff at the Water’s Edge Restaurant in Queens, New York. The mentorship of Chef Masraff cultivated Kelvin’s culinary passion and eventually led him to C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program), a not-for-profit organization that introduces food service career opportunities to disadvantaged youth. Kelvin was eventually awarded a generous scholarship to attend the Culinary institute of America in New York.
Within a long list of culinary accomplishments, Chef Fernandez has also been a runner up on the Food Network’s “Chopped” (Season 14. 2011) and appeared on the HLN Network’s inaugural season of “Cook Your A** Off” (Season 1. 2014). He recently opened a Latin Restaurant, Blend on the Water, in New York City and is pursuing other exciting opportunities.
Previously, Chef Fernandez was the Executive Chef of the STRAND American Bistro located in the fashionable STRAND Hotel on west 37th street in the heart of the fashion district. Delivering a custom menu of New American cuisine with contemporary influences and exotic accents. Beginning his career here at 26 years old, Chef Fernandez was known as the youngest executive chef on the New York City fine dining scene.
